Chana Masala

Chana masala is a popular Indian dish made with chickpeas, tomatoes, onions, and a blend of aromatic spices. It is usually served with rice or naan bread.

Here is a simple recipe for chana masala:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups chickpeas (cooked or canned)
  • 2 large tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, minced
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp amchur powder (dried mango powder)
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Cilantro leaves, chopped for garnishing

Instructions:

  1. Heat the oil in a pan over medium heat.
  2. Add the cumin and coriander seeds, and fry until they start to splutter.
  3. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  4. Add the garlic, ginger, and green chilies, and sauté for another minute.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.
  6. Add the turmeric, garam masala, chili powder, and amchur powder, and mix well.
  7. Add the chickpeas and mix well. If using canned chickpeas, drain and rinse them before adding.
  8. Add salt to taste and mix well.
  9. Add 1 cup of water and bring the mixture to a boil.
  10. Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 10-15 minutes or until the gravy thickens.
  11. Garnish with chopped cilantro leaves and serve hot with rice or naan bread.

Note:

You can adjust the spice level according to your taste preferences. If you like it spicier, you can add more chili powder or green chilies.
